Drop it below: the report appears at once, in two halves. What you can fix yourself, and what Excel will not solve anyway, by the way it is built.
.xlsx or .xlsm will do: quoting, stock, hours, accounts. The messier it is, the more there is to see.
The Excel file usually lives on the office computer: if you are reading this on a phone, send yourself this address and open it from there.
The file never leaves your computer
The first list is yours to keep. Almost every fault in a spreadsheet can be repaired by your own people: duplicates merged, error cells fixed, sheets given real names. It is your work, and you need nobody for it.
The second list is of a different kind. Excel has its merits: it costs nothing, whoever wrote it understands it, it changes in two minutes. But there are things it cannot do and will not learn. A file on a computer or in a shared folder keeps no record of who changed what; in the cloud you find yesterday’s version, not who and why. It can lock a sheet with a password, but whoever knows it can change everything, and nobody is written down. It does not keep March’s price once you overwrite it in November. And when a value is missing it does not stop: it returns a number, and the number looks right.
The second list does not get shorter by tidying the file. If it is about you, it is time to have somebody look at it: the form is under the report, and I will write to you.
No upload and no server: the analysis runs inside the page, on your own computer, and when you close it nothing is left anywhere. You can disconnect from the internet after this page has loaded, and it still works.
The shape of the file: how many sheets, what they are called, how many formulas, where the errors are, what is hidden, who created it and how long it has been growing.
Your numbers. Prices, customers, margins, revenue: none of it is read or shown. And it could not leave here anyway.
A check-up is not a diagnosis. It tells you something is wrong, not what it costs you: that only comes out by watching how you actually work.
.xls (without the final x), this page cannot open it: that is a twenty-year-old format, built a different way. In Excel, Save as → .xlsx, and try again with the copy.
Under the report there is a form: your name, a way to reach you, two lines of your own. I write back myself, in writing, within one working day, with what I see in the report and the price of the first step, and if I think you should keep the file I will say so. No surprise calls, no lists.
The first step, if you want it: one day on your file, €290, all included. The day after you have a document of your own: what it does, what will break, what can be fixed in Excel and what cannot, and what rebuilding it would cost, at a fixed price written inside.
Five rules, written here first: the file is the specification, and the proposal comes in writing, with the price, with no phone call needed (if you want one, we have it); the day delivers a document with a name, and one revision included; the date holds: the document arrives the day after, and if it arrives later the €290 come back, while a number on your accounts is something nobody promises you; the document and the data are yours; no fee, and if a program ever needs a server, the amount is in the proposal first, never in an invoice afterwards.
